Blue-light glasses are everywhere, and so are big promises about them. Here’s an honest answer: what they do, what the research says, and what actually helps tired eyes.

The short answer

Blue-light glasses filter part of the blue light from phone, laptop and TV screens. Many people like how they feel to wear. But research has not shown that they reduce eye strain, improve sleep, or protect your eyes from damage.

What the research says

In 2023 the Cochrane review, one of the most careful kinds of medical evidence, looked at 17 trials. It found that blue-light filtering lenses may give no short-term benefit over normal lenses for eye strain from screens, and that their effect on sleep is unclear. The College of Optometrists in the UK also says there is no strong evidence that they ease eye fatigue, improve sleep or protect the eyes (College of Optometrists summary).

The blue light from screens is also much weaker than daylight. The tired, dry feeling after hours on a screen mostly comes from how we use screens: we stare, blink less, and focus at one distance for a long time.

What actually helps tired eyes

  • The 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds.
  • Blink fully and often. We blink much less when we look at screens.
  • Set up your screen: about an arm’s length away and a little below eye level.
  • Match the brightness of your screen to the room, and turn on night mode in the evening.
  • Get your eyes checked if they still ache. An outdated or missing prescription is a common cause of eye strain.

Who still chooses them?

Plenty of people do, for good reasons:

  • People who simply prefer the slightly warmer, calmer view on screens.
  • People who need glasses anyway, and add a blue-cut coating to their prescription lenses for a small extra cost.
  • People who want a light, clear pair to wear in front of a screen as a style choice.

If that’s you, browse our anti-blue glasses: many product pages include a blue light test on video, so you can see the filter at work. You can also add blue-cut lenses to any frame with your prescription.
